The Art of the Solo Jazz Comp. Saturday, April 9th, 4-5:30pm
(aka How To Improvise Under Pressure)
(aka How To Be a Badass and Build Community)
This is a workshop for vernacular jazz dancers and lindy hoppers looking to build solo improvisational skills, work on performance, and connect with likeminded dancers in the PNW. Let's be part of a solo jazz comp culture that really pops!
We will cover:
-practical skills for building improv confidence
-recognizing musical structures
-practicing different comp formats (spotlight, battle, jam etc.)
-learning from the original clips, taking it back to the source for inspiration and acknowledgement
-connecting with the audience and your fellow competitors
-dancing like yourself
This workshop is open to ALL LEVELS and anyone with any interest in solo jazz jamming, competing or performing. Comfort with a basic vernacular jazz step vocabulary will help you get the most out of this class, but enthusiasm is the only requirement to attend.
Venue is the Upstairs Dance Studio in the Veteran's Memorial Building
1626 Willamette Street, Eugene, OR 97401
