Solo Jazz Foundation: Mama's Stew Workshop. Saturday, Feb 11th, 4-5:30pm
No previous experience is needed for this all-levels solo jazz workshop.
"Solo jazz" or "vernacular jazz," are umbrella terms referring to the wide range of non-partnered movements and steps danced and performed to swing music from the 1920s-1940s.
We will start with basic vocabulary, learning classic steps, including:
Apple jacks
Boogie time
Boogie drops
Charleston
Fall off the Log
Shorty George
Suzie Qs
Tackie Annies
Once we have a solid base, we'll dive into the short and energetic line dance routine: Mama's Stew.
Originally created by Whitey's Lindy Hoppers as a warm-up routine, Mama's Stew or The Stew, was made famous by Mama Lu Parks and Her Dancers, a touring dance company active from the 1960s-1980s dedicated to celebrating all eras of Black American popular dance.
